The Institute of Journalism is the managing partner of GADMO, a German-Austrian alliance of top fact-checkers and researchers fighting disinformation, monitoring its spread, and boosting media literacy across the region.

The Institute of Journalism at TU Dortmund University is the managing partner of the German-Austrian Digital Media Observatory (GADMO).

GADMO brings together leading fact-checking organisations from Germany and Austria with research teams to combat disinformation, raise awareness about misinformation, and promote media literacy. The project is part of the pan-European EDMO network supported by the EU commission. We provide the central platform for fact-checks in German. Our team observes and researches disinformation campaigns, their spread and possible countermeasures by large technology corporations. Furthermore, we actively strive to improve the media literacy of internet users in Germany and Austria.

GADMO is a joint pursuit of eminent news organisations. For the first time, the leading fact-checking organisations of Germany and Austria – Agence France Press (AFP), German Press Agency (DPA), Austria Press Agency (APA) and investigative non-profit research outfit Correctiv – are collaborating. They have been joined by communication and data scientists from the Institute of Journalism and the Department of Statistics at TU Dortmund University as well as the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). The Athens Technology Center is a technical partner in the project.

In this context, the Institute of Journalism is conducting research on the newish journalistic practice of fact-checking on a frequent basis. How do fact-checkers pick social media posts they deem relevant? What sources do they use? What are the topics with the greatest prevalence in fact-checking? Tackling questions like these, Nico Hornig, researcher at the Professorship for Economic Policy Journalism and GADMO, is measuring the fact-checking landscape in Germany using machine learning techniques. He also conducts interviews and surveys on fact-checkers’ working routines and the constraints they face.

GADMO started in 2021 and is currently in its second funding period.
