New Master’s degree program

The new English-only Master’s degree program Economic Policy and Journalism has been approved by independent reviewers. Prospective students are able to apply starting in March 2026. The unique program aims at endowing the next generation of business journalists with in-depth knowledge in economics combined with superb journalistic skills. Graduates will be well-equipped for careers in international and national media as well as adjacent fields.
The EP&J program is run by TU Dortmund’s Institute of Journalism, the biggest university-based media education outfit in the German-speaking countries. With 50 years of experience, it has trained some 2000 alumni working virtually in every corner of the regional media landscape. The institute’s integrated approach rests on four pillars:
- domain knowledge in disciplines such as economics and political science,
- journalism studies and communication science
- hands-on training in writing, researching, and broadcasting on campus,
- internships at eminent partner media such as public and private broadcasters and national newspapers.
Since 2013 the institute has been offering an Economic Policy Journalism program to meet the rising demand for more specialised knowledge in areas such as business cycles, growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, financial markets, trade, global commons, tax and welfare systems. Graduates have been quite successful on the job market.
With the new English-language Master’s degree program, the institute is transposing its successful approach to the international level. Applicants from all over the world are invited to Dortmund, one Germany’s biggest cities located at the heart of the EU. The EP&J programme is directed by Prof. Henrik Müller, professor for Economic Policy Journalism and a leading economics commentator.
