Content: The course offers an introduction to business journalism in theory, practice, and methodology. It classifies journalism within the economic policy system and highlights the role of journalism in the functioning of a democratic public sphere. In particular, it links the goals of economic policy with principles of media economics and approaches from communication science. Special attention is paid to emphasizing information and power asymmetries as market failures. Framing, narratives, and accounts of reality as economic frameworks for interpretation and action are discussed, and news values and quality criteria for business journalism are identified.
Learning objectives: Understanding the role of journalism as an independent authority, applying this to practical journalistic craft.
